Division of Lexicography

Activities:

  • planning, designing, and editing of dictionaries and other lexicographical tools, in print and digital formν
  • preservation and expansion of its lexicographical archives
  • creation of text corpora and digital concordances
  • utilization of the dictionaries and other lexicographical tools for teaching purposes
  • training of young scholars and educators in electronic lexicography and its applications
  • enhancement of the scholarly dialogue concerning lexicography
  • continuation of the Kriaras’ Dictionary

In 2003 Professor Emmanouel Kriaras chose the Centre for the Greek Language as the institute responsible for the completion of the Dictionary of Medieval Vulgar Greek Literature (1100-1669). Plenty of praise and reviews for the Dictionary have been published in Greek and International journals; moreover, the Dictionary has received important awards, such as the French Award Desrousseaux and the Austrian Award Herder. Since the publication of its first volume in 1968, it has been universally acknowledged as a basic tool for the study of Medieval (and Modern Greek) language and literature.

Division of Linguistics

Activities:

  • research on the status of Greek in the European Union in general and in the Balkans in particular (language policy and education)
  • promotion of the history of the Greek language
  • research on Greek dialects
  • language policy and education matters
  • participation in the European Federation of National Institutions for Language (EFNIL), a forum for institutions to exchange information about their work and to gather and publish information about language use and language policy within the European Union
  • participation in international language fairs, organization of  conferences for the promotion of the Greek language and the Centre’s projects (in cooperation with the Directorate of International Educational Relations of the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs)
  • specialized vocabularies and compilation of glossaries
Division for the Support & Promotion of the Greek Language

Activities:

  • organization of the exams for the Certification of Attainment in Greek
  • research projects on the teaching of Modern Greek as a foreign/second language
  • educational material for the teaching of Modern Greek as a foreign/second language (available in the “Portal for the Greek Language”)
Division of Language and Literature

Activities:

  • the study of Greek language and literature (either written in Greek or translated into Greek)
  • the study of language as a translation tool, and the history, theory and practice of literary translation
  • research projects concerning the history of Modern Greek literature and the works of important Greek authors and poets (K.P. Kavafis, Giorgos Seferis, Dionisios Solomos)
  • compilation of digital teaching material, available in the “Portal for the Greek Language”, for the subject of Modern Greek and Contemporary European Literature in Secondary and Higher Education
